The Smithsonian Castle Collection secretary desk that inspired the Georgetown Home Office Group was constructed in Washington, D.C. by a Pennsylvania Avenue cabinetmaker between 1836 and 1839. Designed in the "pillar and scroll" sub-style during the American Classical revival period, the original desk features graceful scroll supports wrapped in richly figured mahogany veneers.
